The Doors Are Opening Again

Updated: Feb 19

The Restoration of Belle Tower Begins

There are certain buildings in downtown Petoskey that feel like they’ve always been there.

224 Michigan Street is one of them.

Built in 1891 as the Seventh-day Adventist Church, this Queen Anne structure has stood at the edge of the business district for over 130 years. Its front-gable roof, ornate façade, and bell tower dome make it one of the most distinctive historic buildings in the Petoskey National Register Historic District.

For decades, the building served different purposes — first as a church, later as office space. And like many historic structures, time left its mark.

But the story isn’t ending.

It’s beginning again.

Why Belle Tower?

Belle Tower of Petoskey exists for one reason:

To preserve historic architecture while creating accessible space for music, makers, and meaningful gatherings.

This isn’t just about saving a building. It’s about restoring a place where people come together.

The sanctuary — with its original hardwood floors and soaring ceilings — can hold approximately 137 seated guests or nearly 300 in an open layout. It was built for gathering. For voice. For resonance.

We believe it still is.

What We’ve Done So Far

Since acquiring the building in July of 2025, restoration work has focused on stabilizing and preparing it for public use.

Progress to date includes:

  • Exterior paint scraping and preparation for a full repaint

  • Siding and trim repair planning

  • Roof replacement planning (scheduled in phases)

  • Interior demolition to reopen portions of the sanctuary space

  • Assessment of window restoration needs

  • Planning for main-level barrier-free restrooms

  • Development of accessibility improvements, including future ramp installation

This is careful, phased restoration.

We are prioritizing structural integrity and long-term sustainability over cosmetic shortcuts.

Historic buildings deserve patience.

What Belle Tower Is Becoming

Belle Tower is evolving into a multi-use cultural space centered on:

🎶 Live Music & Performance

Concerts, seasonal series, acoustic shows, and community performances — operating on a revenue-share model that keeps the space accessible while sustaining restoration.

🎨 Studios & Makers

Affordable lower-level creative studios for artists, musicians, and makers — designed to stay full and active, not exclusive or out of reach.

💍 Weddings & Celebrations

A historic downtown sanctuary available for ceremonies and receptions — premium but competitive, honoring the building’s architectural character.

🏛 Community Gatherings

Workshops, rehearsals, fundraisers, and meetings at accessible hourly rates.

Belle Tower is not designed to be a luxury-only venue.

It is designed to be a working cultural building.

Why Revenue Share Matters

One of the most important decisions we’ve made is implementing a revenue-share model for ticketed events.

Instead of charging artists high flat rental rates, Belle Tower participates in ticket sales. When an event succeeds, both the artist and the building benefit.

This structure allows:

  • Lower base barriers for local musicians

  • Fair participation in commercial success

  • Ongoing funding for restoration

It keeps the space open.

And sustainable.

What’s Next

Upcoming restoration phases include:

  • Roof replacement

  • Window restoration

  • Accessibility improvements

  • Main-level restroom upgrades

  • Continued interior refinements

At the same time, programming is ramping up.

You’ll see:

  • Local musician partnerships

  • Gallery pop-ups

  • Community workshops

  • Wedding bookings

  • And the launch of Belle Tower Radio Hour — a podcast recorded inside the sanctuary featuring local artists, preservation stories, and downtown voices.

Because historic buildings don’t just hold stories. They generate new ones.

How You Can Be Part of This

Belle Tower is mid-restoration.

Every ticket purchased.
